got Machine Error 41, called Brother, they sent out refurbished unit. I always get the error message when I wake up the machine from sleep. Thanks for the good suggestions though. Brad, just sent you an email to inquire about repair.

For some reason the drive was read-only for a short while. Is there a way to determine which backed up files are recoverable and which are irrecoverable? The NAS is likely a hardware product from the likes of Netgear, Synology, Buffalo or QNap - or for those of us with a home-grown backup server running FreeNAS. At least that's what worked for me!
