If I create a new backup it works for about half a day. Is it corrupted? It doesn't > have to actually read all the files, just stat() them. However it isn't on the desktop with the normal Time Machine icon it is just a generic white disk icon. why not try these out

Do not double click on these sparsebundles or try to repair with Disk Utility.
