Even though Apple's own AEBS lets Time Machine save its backup bundle to an AirDisk, it is officially unsupported. When it went to backup, we got the same error. My MacBook would back up perfectly on our NAS, while my wife's would not. I talked with a co-worker and he convinced me to give it a shot on my network drive. All three are from different manufacturers as well, so I don't get caught by a flaw from one manufacturer affecting all three drives. Thank you! Each time I have use my password, then I am given an error message. "This operation can't be complete because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)".

I used to use an external Firewire drive and then moved to my Time Capsule. Either way the solution generally seems to be to create the sparse image manually using a command called hdiutil. Enable "Show Connected Servers on Desktop"If you do not have the Finder set up to show connected servers on the desktop, you will not see the Time Capsule mount. Reset local machine nameIf the computer's local network name is empty, Time Machine may have a problem connecting to the Time Capsule. Try backing up using the existing sparsebundle - but with the admin user and password - as well as freshly rebooting the MBL (and also your Mac) before you start the Often, after doing this, Time Machine will appear to start preparing a backup then fail with a cryptic error code. This is a waste of space, but at least I didn't have to reformat the drive.
